Batik Tourism / Pekalongan Batik Fiesta

In order to commemorate the National Batik Day on October 2nd, usually Pekalongan City hold The national and international events that aim to popularize and promote the use of batik as a manifestation of loving Indonesia. The series of activities at the event include: batik carnival, batik exhibitions, arts and culture performing and others.

It is also reinforces the official recognition from the UNESCO which establishes The Indonesian Batik as the intangible Cultural Heritage Kemanusiaan (Intangible Cultural Heritage for Humanity).

1. Museum Batik

The museum was built on May 23, 2006 and was officially inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. H. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on 12 July 2006. The realization of the Batik Museum in Pekalongan City as a place to explore, preserve and develop batik as an Indonesian cultural heritage and information center should be developed, nurtured and maintained its existence.

This beginning museum function is as a data center and information about batik, a center for research of science and the batik design development, library and a reference in all batik matters, and a place to keep classic batik lawasan and contemporary batik. In addition, it is expected to be documentation, research and information to the public in order to give the benefit to the wider community.

Since the XIV-XVI centuries, Pekalongan city has been known through batik work and the activities of making batik is as one of the main livelihoods by the majority of communities. In July 12th, 1972 representatives of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Central Java, and Division Head of Museum, also the Mayor of Pekalongan city, Drs. R. Supomo founded Pekalongan Batik Museum, located in the center of Pekalongan city. It is located in south of the People's Entertainment Park (THR) Bintang Merdeka building are now at police patrol post area, Regiment XVII Way.

The Batik Museum is 40 m2 and the building is very simple showcasing 1149 collection of batik. The other collection is wayang beber ( beber puppet) of batik cloth aged hundreds of years as well as traditional loom handloom (Not Weaving Machine Tools) as well as equipment for the process of making batik and managed by the Department of Education and Culture (P & K) Pekalongan city.

Batik Museum facilities consist of Audio Visual Room, Pesisiran room / exhibition room I, the Nusantara Room / exhibition room II, Inner Space / Exhibition room III, Hall and Library.

2. Grocery Market of Setono

Batik grocery Market Setono is the first shopping area that sells various handicrafts including batik and some other products. Here, it also sells in the form of retail. Commodities of batik, convection, weaving, palekat and crafts are the main trading centers in Setono grocer Market.

The grocer market is easily accessible, located 3km east side of Pekalongan city, that is on Jl. Raya Baros which is Main road Jakarta - Surabaya (northern way). Beside grocer market, Batik home and other handicraft center are located in some areas in Pekalongan city.

3. Batik Village

In Pekalongan City there are 2 villages belonging to the National Tourism Village namely Kampung Batik Kauman and Kampung Batik Pesindon. In addition Pekalongan city also has Kampung Production Center of handloom Weaving and Batik named Medono village.

1) Kauman Batik Village

Kauman Batik Village is located in East District of Pekalongan. Kauman Batik Village had stood since dozens years ago and had been the first village in the area of Pekalongan city, considering many ancient houses and the old mosque founded around 1852.One proof as the oldest batik village is the discovery of a pattern of Encim Batik, which is a blend of Arabian and Indian batik (Jlamprang) with batik Chinese influence.

Salah satu bukti kauman sebagai kampung batik tertua adalah ditemukannya Batik Encim yang coraknya merupakan perpaduan antara batik Arab dan India (Jlamprang) dengan batik pengaruh Cina.

In 2007, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy set Kauman village as a batik village. Since being established, Kauman Batik village continues to undergo significant growth and has many exhibition spaces, stalks and stores selling the production of batik and batik handicrafts, such as bags, sandals, shoes, purses and other accessories. Economic condition around Kauman batik village seems to undergo much progress by existing of hotels or home stay, supermarkets, malls, and restaurants.

The government builds infrastructures to support productivity as IPAL to overcome the batik waste, information technology (internet), learning batik centers and others. Finally, in 2012 Kauman batik village received an award as one of the best tourist village in Indonesia.

2) Pesindon Batik Village

Pesindon batik village is a sub village whose territory is located in Kelurahan Kergon. Pesindon batik village as a tourist resort not only provides various types of batik but also shows as a place of the batik production center. Visitors can see the making of batik. It is not only batik with high-quality artwork but also education and knowledge about social culture of Pekalongan batik makers.

A total of 33 showrooms and batik craftsmen will spoil visitors. Each showroom will be equipped with a rest area for guests who ensure the comfort compared to shopping in other stores. They can also go directly to the homes of batik production even directly into the batik production center.

In the Batik village is also equipped with the Secretariat, internet access which not only functioned as a center for the promotion and communication of citizens, but also the media to facilitate the transaction up to foreign countries, places of worship, parking areas, and tricycles batik as a means of transportation for visitors who want to enjoy the village atmosphere.

3) Production Center of ATBM (Not Weaving Machine Tools) Village and Medono Batik

Weaving is a kind of Pekalongan batik work art. Weaving handloom village Production Center (Not Weaving Machine Tools) and Batik Medono produce handloom woven fabrics and a variety of craft home interior products such as curtains, tablecloths, rugs, and mats. Batik weaving makers produce towels and cloth for ihram for pilgrimage.

Medono woven products not only attract the local and national markets, but also international customers. The woven products are napkins and scarves produced and they export to several countries including France, USA, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

4) Canting Village (Kampung Canting) Landungsari-Kebulen

As the center of Batik industry, of course, various needs and businesses related to batik develop in the city of Pekalongan. Starting from materials, equipment, machinery to transportation. One of the most needed tools for making Batik is canting. Canting consists of 2 types, namely “canting cap” and “canting tulis”.

The canting craftsmen in Pekalongan are mostly concentrated in Kelurahan Landungsari and Kebulen. The craftsmen in general are the third generation who inherited the skill of making canting from its predecessors. The process of making / working on batik canting cap depends on the complexity of the motive.

For simple motifs can be completed in 2 to 5 days, but for complex motives takes up to 1 (one) month. The price of canting cap ranged from Rp. 100,000 till Rp. 3,000,000. The smoother of the motive so takes longer for the manufacture process and more expensive for the price. Canting cap batik in making requires the level of accuracy, perserving and patience are very high in order to produce a good work of art. Even now, canting cap is not only seen as a tool of batik only, but as a beautiful work of art for decoration and souvenirs.

1. Marine Tourism PPNP

Marine tourism of Pekalongan Archipelago Fishery Port (PPNP) is a sea tourist complex belongs to the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries in the city of Pekalongan. Freddy Numberi, The Minister of Marine and Fisheries, inaugurated officially the sea tourist complex in July 2006.

PPNP marine tourism is on the coast of Pekalongan city on Jl. WR Supratman number 1 Pekalongan archipelago Fishery Port. This tourist area offers views of the beach, sea and estuaries. Visitors can hire a boat to get around the beach and watch the collection of marine fish in the aquarium. They also can go fishing or relaxing on the bridge or the playground.

Facilities at Marine Tourism PPNP Among others: gate of Marine Tourism, the marine tourism area of 10,000 m2, garden flower / tree shade fitted with tree names and descriptions, children's playground. There is also a 3-storey Aquarium Building :

1) 1st Floor : A marine and freshwater aquarium, (air conditioned), contains various types of fish complete with names and descriptions.

2) 2nd Floor : Science Room of 150 m2 contains vessels miniature and fishing gear, research books.

3) 3rd Floor : Open space of 150 m2 for view of sea (viewing post).

2. The beauty of Pasir Kencana beach

Pasir Kencana beach is the main resort owned by Pekalongan City government. This resort is located adjacent to the fish auction place or archipelago fishing port on the North Coast of Java, with a distance of 4.5 Km from the city / train station. This beach is a land area of 1.5 hectares.

The Office of Tourism and Culture Pekalongan city manages the tourist object. The facilities available are children's toys and playgrounds, outdoor stage, a collection of animals, benches and garden to relax, Water Pedi cab, Cafe, mosque, toilets and Bathroom, as well as parking space.

Other tourist objects that exist around Pasir Kencana beach are the Crematorium, temples, fishponds, and fish aquarium in the Port. Here visitors can relax while watching the sunrise or sunset, anglers and boat activity, playing in the park, fishing, beach sports. The visitor can feel the fresh coastal air.

3. The beauty of Slamaran beach

The beauty of Slamaran beach is located on the east coast of Pasir Kencana beach, bordered by the estuary of Nusantara Fishery Port, this place can be reached through the harbor with cruises boat and overland using public transport about 5 km from the city center or bus terminal of Pekalongan city.

As a tourist resort, Slamaran beach has very beautiful scenery, the fresh air and the visitors can see sunrise and sunset so that it is very interesting to visit.Land area of Slamaran Beach is about 3.5 ha, equipped with large parking space, restaurants, food stalls and boat rentals that are ready to take visitors around Slamaran beach.

4. PIM / Mangrove Park

Project Description

One of Pekalongan city’s natural potentials is a coastline, which can be functioned as a tourist resort. There is a mangrove area in Pekalongan city. In some examples the development of mangrove ecosystems in Indonesia, it can also be developed into a as a educative tourist resort that helps increase local income from tourism. In addition, the mangrove ecosystem can also enhance the quality of marine life that is very profitable for anglers in the surroundings. Mangrove area in Pekalongan city is located in the Village of Kandang Panjang District of North Pekalongan city. The area development plan reaches 90 hectares and only about 5.7 hectares, infrastructures have been constructed, and while the remaining area about 84.3 hectares can be developed for other facilities.

Existing Condition

Development of these mangrove areas are not only as a marine tourism but also as a family and a means of education facilities for environmental protection and disaster mitigation. The existing infrastructure facilities are :

1) Center for Mangrove Learning Restoration

Is a place of counseling and learning as well as an information center that appeals to visitors because it has several facilities such as learning facilities: meeting room, secretarial office, replication of mangrove ecosystem and library / community reading park.

2) Shelter

Can be used as a place to rest the visitors while enjoying the beauty of mangrove and cool coastal wind of Pekalongan.

3) Permanent and semi permanent nursery

It is a mangrove breeding practice place such as Avicennia lanata Ridley, Avicenniamarina, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora apiculata Blume, Rhizophora mucronata Lam, Rhizophora stylosa Griff for community groups of environmentalists, students and the general public.

4) Jogging Track

This pedestrian way as a circulation path for visitors to enjoy the scenery around the area and some recreational facilities are planned.

Market Aspect

Pekalongan city is an old city located in the northern coastline as one of the strategic city of destination. It is known as a city of batik production center so that tourists not only go shopping but also they can enjoy the beauty of the beach through Pekalongan Mangrove Park.

Cultural Tourism

1. Syawalan Tradition / Giant Lopis

Pekalongan city is rich in traditional cultural events. Pekalongan people have maintained this tradition for long time. The tourists, who visit coincides with the traditional events, can come to see the interesting and unique ceremony. The event is Syawalan tradition / krapyakan (giant lopis).

Syawalan is a tradition done by Pekalongan city community especially Krapyak people in the northern city of Pekalongan, which is held on every seventh day after Eidul fithri. The most interesting thing in this tradition is the existing of giant lopis whose size reaches a height of 2 meters diameter of 1.5 meters and weighing up to 225 Kg. After the prayer together, the Mayor of Pekalongan city cuts the giant lopis and distributes to the visitors.

The visitors usually scramble to get the lopis aiming to get a blessing. The lopis tradition aims to strengthen the inter-community relationship between Krapyak people and the community surroundings and the sticky lopis symbolizes it.

Krapyak society usually provides free snacks and drinks to visitors. The visitors who come to the tradition reach thousands of people from across the city of Pekalongan and surrounding areas. After celebrating the lopis tradition, the visitors usually visit to Slamaran beach for a vacation with the family just enjoying the fresh air in the beach or enjoying the excitement of free entertainment prepared by Krapyak society.

2. Pek Cun

Confucianism People in Pekalongan city hold Pekcun tradition.Pekcun tradition is usually held at Pasir Kencana beach. The event is symbolized by the ritual offerings accompanied by Barongsay. Then it is followed by a prayer at the altar of offerings and sea alms with releasing a replica of the boat to the sea. There is also a contest enforcing a chicken egg on the table.

According to the story, Pek cun means one hundred boats. This ritual aims to commemorate Khut Guan minister, which were honest and kind, but his friends removed him. Eventually he chose to throw himself into the river. The departure of the honest minister makes his colleagues look for him in the river by using hundreds of boats. That is the story why the ritual is known as Pekcun.

Pekcun tradition in Pekalongan city has become the annual agenda of tourism. Although related to Confucianism, but this event also involves other community groups.

3. Nyadran / Sea Alms

Sea Alms/ Nyadran is a tradition often done by Pekalongan people and it happens in various regions in Indonesia. The anglers’ community of Pekalongan city carries out this tradition every Shura month as an expression of gratitude to God Almighty for the abundant marine products.

In the tradition, the anglers and the community hold a ritual Sadranan to decorate fishing vessels containing offerings include Buffalo Head, various market snack, puppets of Pandawa lima Dewi Sri, and a variety of children's toys. Through several processions and prayer, the community brings the offerings to the middle of the sea preceded by releasing a buffalo head by Spiritual Leaders.

The released boat attracts anglers’ children to catch it and they hope to get a blessing from Almighty.At the same time, the ritual of staging Puppet with Bedog Basu plot is held. It tells the fish on land and at sea. There are several sport competitions, arts and caught fish culinary.

4. Festival Of Batik Carnival Costume

Pekalongan as a City of Batik and as a pioneer Creative City of the world continues to show creativity in the field of batik. One event that is held regularly in conjunction with Batik Week is Batik Carnival Costume Festival.

This festival is a creativity contest of batik carnival costumes by people from various categories, namely SD, SLTP, SLTA and General which consists of universities, batik entrepreneurs, hotel and restaurant businessmen, banking and government agencies. This festival is held since 2011 and each year brings different themes.

The most distinguishing feature of the Pekalongan Batik carnival is the raw material consisting of natural materials and original batik material. Prior to the carnival, participants will be trained in workshops how to drawing techniques, fashion design, make up and walk on the stage.. Participants will perform a carnival from Pekalongan Square (alun Alun Pekalongan) to Jetayu area as far as 2 kilometers. The winner of the carnival will usually be staged in cultural arts activities inside and outside the city. This festval is more attractive to tourists because it is usually held in conjunction with International Batik Week / Batik Nusantara Week. At this Carnival is also at once carried out Cultural Parade Pekalongan City followed by artists and art communities of Pekalongan City.

5. Cap Gomeh Carnaval

Cap Go Meh is the epitome of the fifteenth day and the last day of a series of Chinese New Year celebrations for communities of Tionghoa migration living outside of China. The term Cap Go Meh comes from the Hokkien dialect which, when taken literally, means 15 days or nights after Imlek. Cap has ten meaning, Go is five, and Meh means night. Cap Go Meh is also often called Yuan Hsiao Cieh or Shang Yuan Cieh in Mandarin.

This celebration was originally celebrated by Xie Han Dynasty (206 BC - 221 AD), as a day of reverence to the god of Thai-yi, the supreme deity in the sky. The ceremony is celebrated on a regular basis every year on the first 15 months according to the lunar calendar which is the first month of the year. Before the Han Dynasty ended, the ceremony was formerly done in private, and only for the palace. This celebration is not well known in general by Chinese society. This ceremony must be done at night, it must be prepared lighting with lights from dusk until the next day. These were then the lanterns and colorful lights that became the main complement in the Cap Go Meh celebration.

Installation of the lanterns is intended to repel pests and animals destroyer plants. At that time, the farmers will also observe the change of fire in the lantern, to know the weather throughout the year ahead. Cap Go Meh is celebrated in several regions of Indonesia, the largest being in Singkawang. 6. Panjang Jimat Carnaval

As time passes, Pekalongan becomes a strong city of culture. Thousands of people from various communities participated enliven the Panjang Jiwo Parade in Pekalongan. This event is one of a series of memorial activities of Maulid Nabi organized by Kanzus Sholawat. This very festive event is oriented to unite and build interreligious and internal harmony among religious people. Equally important is to foster a sense of community ownership of leaders, in all levels and grades. Because the figures and leaders that is true 'Jimat' of a nation, especially the people of Pekalongan City.

This Panjang Jimat Parade has been held almost every year. The Panjang Jimat is not a talisman. The origin of the word is from 'azimah’ in Arabic which means determination. So it means renewing our determination in worship, and striving for this homeland, remembering and praying the Messenger of Allah, the Ulama and the People of Sholih, so that we will not forget our origins, we are Islam by reason of who, where, grateful for it all with gratitude for who made the cause of our Islam. Our Islam is from Parents, grandfathers, great-grandparents and continues upwards to the scholars or Wali Songo who brought Islam to this homeland.

A fuller version states that the Panjang Jimat means the Panjang (Long) is all the life span and the Jimat (Amulet) is the one who is in care / one who is treated ie we are the Muslims who are cared for 2 khalimah syahadat. So the meaning of Panjang Jimat, we are as Muslims must maintain and care for the 2 khalimah syahadah throughout our lives. The goal is to invite young people to increase the sense of unity and integrity. Therefore, in this activity is not only followed by one class of religion, but also from non-Muslims, various ethnic and professional.

In the procession, in the front row is a group carrying the flag Red and White. The group consisted of the Indonesian National Army (TNI) with the Police. While behind the group of flag bearers, accompany the various attractions displayed by the parade participants. Various marching band groups from several schools at Pekalongan City and Pekalongan regncy (kabupaten) and Batang, Banser member ranks, IPNU-IPPNU, lion dancers and some other youth organizations that enlivened the parade.

The Panjang Jimat Parade is shown each ahead of the Maulid activity held by Kanzus Sholawat. Religious tourism

1. Pilgrimage to the cemetery of Sayyid Ahmad Bin Abdullah Bin Tholib Al Atas

Pekalongan is one of the important cities in the spread of Islam in the coastal island of Java. There is no doubt that the influential Islamic figures are buried in Pekalongan city. One of them is Sayyid Ahmad Bin Abdullah Bin Tholib Al Atas. He was a great priest (Ulama) who during his life is a pioneer of the establishment of Islamic boarding school in Java.

As a priest, he had a brilliant idea to set up the first classical Madrasah Salafiyah Ibtidaiyah in Pekalongan city. He died in 1929 AD. His tomb is located in Jalan Irian Sapuro Village, West Pekalongan District, about one kilometer from the bus station Pekalongan city. The funeral Complex is also contained in the old Mosque called 'MASJID AULIA "which was built in 1113 AH / 1714 AD.

Culinary Tourism

Beside femaous with the batik, Pekalongan city also has the special culinary. Here are some examples of typical Pekalongan Culinary that are worth trying.

1. Megono Rice

The word “Megono” was taken from the Javanese words 'Mergo' meaning cause and 'ono' meaning there. Megono is made from young jackfruit and coconut. If young jackfruit is hard to get, bamboo shoots or buds used as its replacement.

In the past, megono is generally only found in food stalls for lower middle class community along the north coast of Pekalongan city until Batang regency.However, Megono rice is adopted with Soto Pekalongan, can be found in several restaurants in Semarang, Jakarta, and other big cities. Making megono rice is not too hard. The young jackfruit chopped up into small is boiled. After cooked, then it is mixed with ointment spices consisting of grated coconut and spices are blended such as garlic, onion, chili, lime, kencur and salt.

2. Garang Asem

3. Tauto

Tauto pekalongan is a type of soup with tauco herb. Soto from Pekalongan is indeed using sweet tauco as a season. Tauto uses brisket meat, boiled eggs and chips. It is served with a sprinkling of fried onions, celery leaves and lime juice.

Serving tauto is quite simple, just filled with white rice noodles, scallions, onions and gravy. After the ingredient is mixed, it is added with the tauto that is cooked and mashed soybeans. With the soy season, fragrant broth increases with a delicious flavor. This is what differentiates it from other soup. It is usually available as a complement menu such as pekalongan fried tempeh and tofu.

4. Kluban

Kluban is a typical food of Pekalongan residents, especially in the district of Pekalongan regency namely Kedungwuni, Pekajangan, Wonopringgo on the afternoon. Kluban consists of long beans, bean sprouts, cabbage, spinach or kale with herbs of Mboksiyah = chili, terasi (condiment made from pounded and fermented shrimp or small fish), salt, greater galingale and being mixed with grated coconut. Kluban usually mixes with bothok or Pindang Tetel.

Bothok is broth with vegetables, tofu and Bongkrek (oncom) with dilute santan (milk squeezed from coconut) then poured into sepincuk (banana leaves formed in certain shape and a hook stick to place Kluban). Kluban bothok and Kluban Pindang Tetel is a favorite food for Pekalongan residents.

5. Tofu Chips
